Fantastic Late Georgian Shoe Snuff Box w/ Pique Work, Love Token
This delightful little wooden shoe holds a secret: push down on the inset wood on the top, and it will swing open to reveal a tiny hollowed out stash space. Made circa 1920, it is beautifully decorated with pique work (tiny brass pins hammered into the wood to make a pattern). On the right side, the pique work forms the name "Ann," on the left side, her surname "Worth"; as these were often given as tokens of love, it seems the maker thought to personalize this shoe with the name of their beloved (which seems rare, according to my research). The toe of the shoe is also embellished with pique work in the shape of a bow. Functions well, craftsmanship is lovely, and just a fabulous petite piece of history. 4.25"L (11cm) x 1.25"D (3cm) x 1.5"H (4cm), $225
